Evolution of the gut-brain axis – linking behaviour and metabolism
The major aim of this project is to understand the organization of the tripartite interaction system consisting of the brain, the intestine, and the microbiota. Using the fruit fly Drosophila as the study object, targeted manipulation of each of these components should be employed to elucidate information flows and to understand how microbiota, behaviour and metabolism affect each other and how this interplay impacts the fitness of the organism.
Evolutionary constraints that determine disease susceptibility and disease resistance in chronic inflammatory lung diseases
The aim of this project is to understand the mechanisms that lead to chronic lung diseases and which factors mediate susceptibility or resistance and why. These studies will be conducted with a Drosophila model of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and will combine experimental evolution and directed manipulation of the genetic situation in an established smoking model.
