Adapting to times of malnutrition - what is the price of it

Periods of malnutrition with low-quality food or periods of hunger are part of the life of most animals. Accordingly, mechanisms have been evolved that enable these phases to be survived as well as possible. However, studies in different organisms could also show that living through such a period induces long-lasting, sometimes lifelong changes, which could affect the further life not only in a positive way. Such a reaction possibly represents a pre-adaptation for a soon to be expected starvation period.

Within the framework of this project, the mechanisms of this food stress-induced memory effect will be elucidated using Drosophila as an experimental model. Based on this, the costs of such an adaptation under different environmental conditions will be assessed and thus a comprehensive understanding of this important adaptation will be achieved.
