Construction Start at the Max Planck Institute Plön

Demolition work on the old buildings will start on March 10. Everything is to be completed by the end of 2024, including the refurbishment of the parts of the building that will remain.

Now it's getting concrete: Next Wednesday, the demolition excavators will move in at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology to first demolish the so-called "Schlösschen", an outbuilding that previously housed some offices. This will be followed by the demolition of the old lecture hall, the cafeteria, the library and the administration wing. Already last year, the interim building was erected on the site opposite the main building as an alternative area.

A large building for scientific work will be newly created, with 600 square meters of laboratory space alone. In addition, there will be offices, a new cafeteria and infrastructure rooms, including 108 square meters just for server rooms, for example. The new lecture hall, where public lectures will again be held, will have a capacity for 150 people. In total, about 2800 sqm of pure usable space will be newly built.
The new main entrance of the institute will be at the old location facing August-Thienemann-Straße.
The move into the new building is planned for 2023, and the renovation work on the old parts of the building should then also be completed by the end of 2024.

The Max Planck Society is investing a total of 28.3 million euros net for the entire work. The construction planning and facade design is being carried out by "mhb architekten & ingenieure" from Rostock.
