What to expect

The dual training programme lasts a total of 3.5 years and is divided into several phases.
During the first year, basic training takes place at the Research Center Borstel (Leibniz Lung Center), where accommodation is provided.
From the second year onwards, the training continues at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Plön.
In addition, apprentices attend the vocational school at the Lübeck Trade School one to two days per week.

Application period and start

This apprenticeship position is advertised every two years.
The next call for applications will open in January 2027 – please submit your documents only after the official announcement.

Your everyday work might include

  • Planning, performing, documenting and evaluating scientific experiments
  • Learning and applying biological and chemical methods
  • Operating laboratory equipment (e.g. microscopes, centrifuges, sequencing instruments)
  • Working with living organisms (plants, animals, bacteria)

What we expect

  • A good secondary school certificate, advanced technical college entrance qualification, or A-level equivalent – applicants who have started but not completed university studies are also welcome
  • Mathematical understanding and good observational skills
  • Good English skills
  • Strong interest in natural sciences
  • Team spirit, independence and good organisational skills
  • Enjoyment in working with people from various national and cultural backgrounds
