“Highly Cited Researcher 2025”: Recognition for Prof. John Baines – and other leading scientists in Kiel and Lübeck
Eleven researchers in northern Germany rank among the world’s most cited scientists
Prof. Dr. John F. Baines heads the Evolutionary Medicine Section at the Institute for Experimental Medicine at UKSH, Kiel Campus, and Kiel University. He has been Professor of Evolutionary Genomics at Kiel University since April 2009. His research group links the UKSH, Kiel Campus, with the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Plön and investigates the evolution of disease genes and the genetic basis of the interaction between mammals and their microbiota. One focus is on chronic inflammatory diseases. Prof. Baines is anchored in Kiel's excellence research in the Cluster of Excellence ‘Precision Medicine in Chronic Inflammation’ (PMI) and builds bridges between medical and evolutionary biology research.
The Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology is delighted to share that Prof. Dr. John F. Baines, long-standing associated member of our institute, has been named a “Highly Cited Researcher 2025.” The annual list, compiled by Clarivate Analytics, highlights researchers whose publications are among the most frequently cited worldwide — a strong indicator of scientific relevance, visibility, and long-term impact.
The ranking focuses on publications from the past eleven years that belong to the top 1% most cited papers in their field. In 2025, the global list includes 6.868 researchers across 21 disciplines, representing a total of 7.131 recognitions, with 363 based in Germany.
