Abstract:

Our understanding of the evolutionary forces driving the adaptation of antibiotic resistant bacteria is mostly based on the assumption of constant, homogeneous environments. In this talk we will focus on discussing how an environment with a heterogeneous temporal structure imposes a dynamic range of selective pressures that can influence the emergence and stability of drug resistance in microbial microcosms. To achieve this goal, we will use data-driven mathematical and computational models combined with experimental evolution to study how bacterial populations adapt to unpredictable and hostile environments.
