Fragility of ideas

Fragility of ideas
Having ideas is common, bad ones more so than good ones. However even the best ones are difficult to translate into practice because they encounter hurdles during their development. The talk 'fragility of ideas' deals with the nature of these hurdles and discusses the human factors which create and influence them in a variety of different historical and contextual settings. As a guide it uses the story of the development of new heart valve technology which I accompanied from the concept to clinical application. [more]

Going viral? Panel at ESOF 2020

Going viral? Panel at ESOF 2020
How can the spread of COVID 19 be controlled? One approach that has been discussed lately is to release a virally transmitted vaccine to disperse it among the population. But is this really ethically acceptable? Join the panel at ESOF 2020 on Sept 3, 18:00 - 19:30, co-organized by Guy Reeves, Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology! [more]

The Entangled Fates of Viruses and Their Microbial Hosts

Microbes usually don't live isolated but in large communities. Despite the importance of these communities for our health and well being, we have a very limited understanding of how these communities mechanistically work. A central factor that shapes microbial assemblages are the interactions between the microbes. [more]
