Cancer is one of the leading causes of human
mortality. Recent study has shown the ubiquity of cancer
across the tree of life and sought to explain why cancer is
so prevalent in some species, but virtually absent in
others. In this talk I will provide an overview of how
evolution shapes cancer over multiple biological levels,
from cells to species. Particular attention will be given to
theory and empirical findings that elucidate the
contributions of selection and environment to patterns in
some of the best studied mammals, including humans. Finally,
I will discuss the challenge of how evolution not only
characterizes tumour growth and cancer incidence, but may
also be harnessed in anti-cancer therapies.
