Doktorand/innen 2014

Diese Doktorand/innen begannen 2014 in der IMPRS und 2015 mit ihren PhD-Projekten.

Christoph Eschenbrenner
I was born in Hanau, Germany and received my Master Degree in "Molecular and Cellular Biology" at the Philipps University Marburg in 2014. Since summer 2014 I'm working as a PhD student in the group "Environmental Genomics"  at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel, supervised by Prof. Dr. Eva Stukenbrock and I'm an associated member of the IMPRS.
My PhD project is about the evolutionary genomics and functional characterization of the fungal grass pathogen Zymoseptoria brevis and the other members of the Zymoseptoria species complex.
In my freetime I like to read good books and go fishing.

Christoph Gahr

Christoph Gahr

I was born close to Kaiserslautern, Germany. I did my Bachelor in Biology at the University of Erlangen and my Masters in Behavioural Neurobiology at the University of Groningen (Netherlands). I am currently doing my PhD within the IMPRS for Evolutionary Biology working on the Molecular basis of speciation in three-spined stickleback. My work is part of the Evolutionary Ecology department of Prof. Dr. Manfred Milinski at the Max-Planck Institute in Plön.

I was born in Germany and studied Biology at the Christian-Albrechts-Universiät zu Kiel, where I received my B. Sc. I am currently a PhD student within the IMPRS for Evolutionary Biology working on the adaptation to climate change. Therefore I will analyze the genetic and epigenetic response to experimental temperature and salinity changes in Baltic Sea sticklebacks  at the GEOMAR. My supervisor is Prof. Dr. Thorsten Reusch.

Elzbieta Iwaszkiewicz

Elzbieta Iwaszkiewicz

I was born in Warsaw, Poland, where I studied Biology and Psychology at the University of Warsaw. I received my B.Sc. in Population Genetics in 2011 and continued education at the faculty of Oceanography and Marine Environments at the University of Pierre and Marie Curie (Paris VI), where I obtained my M.Sc. diploma in 2014. I am currently a Ph.D. student at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Plön (Germany), working within the group Evolutionary Genetics of fish, under supervision of Dr. Arne Nolte. My work focuses on transcriptome analysis and studying thermal adaptation in the sculpin fish study system.

I was born in Berlin, Germany and studied Molecular and Cellular Biology at the Philipps-University in Marburg. For my Bachelor and Master Thesis I worked at the Max-Planck-Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology in the group of Eva Stukenbrock. For my PhD I moved to Kiel, where I am currently working at the Botanical Intitute of the Christian-Albrechts University with the plant pathogenic fungus Zymoseptoria tritici, supervised by Eva Stukenbrock. My research interests are epigenetic processes such as Histone- and DNA Methylation combined with evolutionary analyses.

Ashley Norris
I was born in Chicago, and finished my bachelors studying animal sciences at Purdue University (USA) in 2013. I then moved to Germany to pursue research, focusing on microbiology at the University of Würzburg. I am currently working on the evolution of antibiotic resistance for my PhD, in the group of Prof. Dr. Hinrich Schulenburg.  My research interests center on alternative antibiotic therapies that limit the resistance of evolution in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In my free time, I love to do anything outdoors, to hike and explore new landscapes, and to spend time with any sort of animals.

Federica Pierini
I was born in Rome (Italy) where I studied Human Biology and Evolution at the University of Rome Tor Vergata. I conducted my master thesis at Centre for Human Palaeoecology & Evolutionary Origins at University of York (UK) and received my Masters Degree in 2013. In 2014 I joined as a visiting student the Paleogenomics Lab at the Institute of Evolutionary Biology (Spain). I am currently a PhD student within the IMPRS for Evolutionary Biology working on the evolution and function of adaptive immunogenetic diversity in humans in the group of Dr. Tobias Lenz.

Dr. Roderich Römhild

I was born in Mannheim, Germany, and studied Biology at the Christian-Albrechts University in Kiel. I received my bachelor’s degree in 2014. My thesis project on antibiotic resistance evolution in the lab of Prof. Hinrich Schulenburg was so exciting that I headed straight into my PhD project. I am currently studying how bacteria evolve in fluctuating environments. I wish to analyse how bacteria optimize fitness in environments that change unpredictably. In my leisure time I play guitar, explore nature or do microscopy. I also enjoy being part of the German organizing committee of the world’s largest biology competition for school students (International Biology Olympiad).

I was born in India and studied at the Bharathidasan University, India, where I received my Masters Degree in Bioinformatics in 2010. I am currently a PhD student within the IMPRS for Evolutionary Biology working on the evolution of homospermidine synthases in convolvulaceae in the group for Biochemical Ecology and Molecular Evolution with Prof. Dr. Dietrich Ober at the Botanical Institute of the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel.
In my free time I like to read, travel, playing guitar and cycling.

Loukas Theodosiou

I was born in Greece, and studied Biology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, where I received my BSc in 2012. Then I studied evolutionary biology at the LMU University of Munich where I received my MSc in 2014. Currently I am doing my PhD at the Max Planck Institute in Plön, supervised by Dr. Lutz Becks. My studies focus on the eco-evolutionary dynamics that favor local adaptation.
