Prof. Dr. John Baines receives one out of eight "SH-Chairs"

May 08, 2017

John Baines, Professor of Evolutionary Genomics at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel and head of the research group for Evolutionary Biology at the Max Planck Institute in Plön, did receive one of the so-called "Schleswig-Holstein Excellence-Chairs".

On Thursday, February 09, 2017, representatives of the universities of Kiel and Lübeck, as well as the minister of science, Kristin Alheit, introduced the concept. The "SH-Chairs" are intended to link excellent scientists to sites in Schleswig-Holstein. They receive funding for a maximum of six years for their research so that they can implement an additional junior professorship in their working groups.

As part of the "Inflammation at Interfaces" excellence cluster, John Baine's appointment is divided between the Medical Faculty of CAU and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Plön. His working group thus serves as a link between medical and evolutionary biology research.

"I am very happy about this and I am honored to have received such great support from our research," said John Baines. "The 'Schleswig-Holstein-Chair' enables our working group to engage in further research on evolutionary hypotheses relevant to human health in further microbiological studies."

"We want to strengthen university top research in the country and promote the strategy of excellence," said Minister of Science Kristin Alheit. "The strategy of excellence is also intended to contribute to the rapid use of current research results for patients," says Alheit. The state of Schleswig-Holstein is participating in the funding of the "SH-Chairs", so that the potential for life science in the country can be optimally utilized.

Further information on "SH-Chairs" can be found in the German press release of the excellence cluster "Inflammation at Interfaces" on this subject.
